The iPad

Posted by McSimillian

The rumor is true
Apple's new product is a tablet
and they called it the iPad.

No, not this iPad...

This iPad!

The event location in California

Its supposed to fill in the gap between smartphones and laptops

People used to think its netbooks, but Steve Jobs points out their flaws

A better solution would be a tablet
but a number of companies have tried and they all failed miserably
i wonder if this is going to be a great success just like the iPhones and iPods

Steve Jobs holding one up, showing how thin and light it is
only 0.5 inches thick and weighing at 1.5 pounds

First impression; looks just like a huge iPhone/iPod Touch
first features, you can change the background wallpaper

Teh keyboard, which i think is weird
coz you're basically typing with 2 hand on a piece of glass
will need some getting used to... :\

The Basic Apps
All the basic apps found in the iPhone/iPod Touch are on the iPad
except they're recreated from scratch to take full advantage of the iPad's larger screen

Safari

Mail
you can open file attachments directly
e.g. PDF

Photo

Music

Video

Calendar

Youtube
supports HD now!

Maps with Google Street View

Contacts

iTunes Store

Appstore

Third Party Apps
Games
you can run almost all the iPhone/iPod Touch apps on the iPad
and scale it up to fit the iPad's screen size
i can really see a big potential for RTS games on the iPad's larger screen
imagine Star Craft 2!! Or Supreme Commander!!

The New York Times App
Read the papers like a real one
except they can add slideshows and videos into the papers

Brushes
A painting app for artist
Basically you have a portable Photoshop

New Exclusive Apps for the iPad
iBooks
read e-Books!
if this becomes popular
its gonna put Kindle outta business

iBooks Store

Book Publishers
who worked with Apple to provide their books digitally on the iBook store

iWork
in case if you don't know, iWork for Mac is like Microsoft Office for Windows
iWork consists of Keynote (Powerpoint), Pages (Word), Numbers (Excel)
This 3 apps perhaps impressed me the most during the presentation
but it doesn't come default with the iPad
sold separately for $9.99 each

Keynote

Pages

Numbers

iPad SDK
They released the SDK on the same day the iPad was announced
Developers can develop apps early and put up their apps for sale on time when the iPad is released

Technical Specification
nothing was mentioned regarding the resolution
but i bet its huge since it supports HD!

It uses the 30 pin connector similar to the iPhone/iPod Touch to connect to your Mac/PC
also comes with an optional model with 3G so you can have internet everywhere you go

Environmentally Friendly

The Price!
Throw in another $130 if you want 3G

Accessories/Docks
The product isnt even out yet and Apple's already made some products for it
like this Folder which acts as a carrying case and a stand

and a full keyboard dock which also charges the iPad
i knew the on-screen keyboard must've sucked
that's why they made this

The downs:

  • No camera = no video call, conferencing etc
  • No multitasking, only 1 app at a time
  • No flash (except Youtube)
The ups:
  • Larger screen and dpi
  • Supports HD
  • Revamped basic apps carried from the iPhone e.g. Calendar, Mail, Photo etc
  • iBooks, supports eBooks reading
  • Longer battery life (10 hrs) if compared to a netbook
  • iWork apps
So in conclusion, i think the hardware itself is rather satisfying
with a few exceptions e.g. no camera
while the software is where the iPad is not pushing the limits and thinking out of the box enough
but since its just the software
Apple could perhaps launch a new updated firmware in the future that could prove to be more satisfy.
